Brief About IS Codes.

What is meant by IS Codes?

IS Codes are published by BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS, these codes are used by civil engineers in India for the purpose of Analysis and Design of civil engineering structures like Buildings, Dams, Roads, Railways and Airports.

What is the purpose of IS Codes?

These codes have special importance in the civil field. This code even contains numerical which are empirical and these can be used in the designs of structural elements too.
These IS codes are even developed for strong rooms (vaults) in banks.

The IS Codes mentioned below are used by every civil engineer initially.

For All Structures:
  • IS 456: 2000 Plain and Reinforced Concrete - Code of Practice.
  • SP 16: 1980 Design Aids for Reinforced Concrete to IS 456: 1978
  • SP 24 (S and T): 1983 Explanatory Handbook on Indian Standard Code of Practice for Plain and Reinforced Concrete.
  • SP 34: 1987 Handbook on Concrete Reinforcement and Detailing.
  • IS 13920: 1993 Ductile detailing of reinforced concrete structures subjected to seismic forces - Code of practice.
For Steel Structures:
  • IS 800: 1984 Code of practice for general construction in steel.
  • IS 801: 1975 Code of practice for use of cold-formed light gauge steel structural members in general building construction.
For loads:
  • IS 875: Part 1: 1987 Code of practice for design loads (other than earthquake)for buildings and structures Part 1 Dead loads - Unit weights of building material and stored materials (Incorporating IS:1911-1967).
  • IS 875: Part 2: 1987 Code of practice for design loads (other than earthquake) for buildings and structures: Part 2 Imposed loads.
  • IS 875: Part 3: 2015 Code of Practice for Design Loads (Other than Earthquake) for Buildings and Structures - Part 3: Wind Loads.
  • IS 875: Part 4: 1987 Code of practice for design loads (other than earthquake) for buildings and structures Part 4 Snow loads.
  • IS 875: Part 5: 1987 Code of practice for design loads (other than earthquake) for buildings and structures Part 5 Special loads and load combinations.
For Earthquake:
  • IS 1893: Part 1: 2016 Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures - Part 1: General Provisions and Buildings.
For Prestressed Concrete:
  • IS 1343: 1980 Code of Practice for Prestressed Concrete.
  • TR 43: Handbook on Prestressed Concrete.
For Storage of Liquids:
  • IS 3370: Part 1: 1965 Code of practice for concrete structures for the storage of liquids: Part 1 General requirements
  • IS 3370: Part 2: 1965 Code of practice for concrete structures for the storage of liquids: Part 2 Reinforced concrete structures
  • IS 3370: Part 3: 1967 Code of practice for concrete structures for the storage of liquids: Part 3 Prestressed concrete structures
  • IS 3370: Part 4: 1967 Code of practice for concrete structures for the storage of liquids: Part 4 Design tables.
For Architectural Engineers:
  • SP 7: 1983 National building code of India 1983
