Properties of Concrete : (Part-1) _ STRENGTH PARAMETER #2

1. Properties in Strength Parameter:  #2

After knowing Compressive Strength and Tensile strength of concrete, it is mandatory to know about the Characteristic Strength of concrete.

    C. CHARACTERISTIC STRENGTH OF CONCRETE: It is defined as the value of the strength of concrete below which not more than 5% of the test results are expected to fall. This may be for both Cylinder and Cube.

    • Partial Factor of Safety: Factor of Safety is defined as the ratio of  "Load carrying capacity of a member to the Load on the member."
Factor of safety (f) = (Load carrying capacity of a member)/(load on the member)
    • This is generally used in Limit State Method.
      • Types of Factor of Safety:
        • Partial Factor of Safety for LOAD
        •  Partial Factor of Safety for MATERIALS.
For Detailed Information about Partial Factor of Safety, kindly check it out in
IS 456: 2000- Clause 36 of Page No.: 67
  • Characteristic Strength of Member/Cube = Compressive Strength (fck)
  • Characteristic Strength of Structure = 0.67 * Compressive Strength (fck) = 0.67 * fck
    • Design Strength:  The Strength to be taken for the purpose of "Design" is well known to be Design Strength parameter.
Design Strength (Fd) =  ( Characteristic Strength of structure/(Partial Factor of Safety of material)
  • Design Strength = (0.67 * fck) / (1.5) = 0.45 * fck
